An interview with the Mehler Textile Factory: Wool Fabrics and Quality Since 1644

Ein Interview mit der Tuchfabrik Mehler, Wollstoffe und Qualität seit 1644

Tradition and Daily Life at Germany's Oldest Textile Mill

When you walk into a factory that has been in operation since 1644, you might expect everything to revolve around its nearly 400-year history.

But for Mr. Mehler, it is one thing above all else: everyday life.

“I don’t walk in here thinking, ‘These are special walls.’ It’s just business as usual.”

Everyday life at the Mehler Textile Factory is not about looking back, but rather focuses on what is created there day after day. The daily rhythm of the factory is shaped by many small decisions, well-established processes, and a commitment to producing exactly what is needed. History is, of course, ever-present, but it usually remains in the background, providing the framework for the day-to-day work.

Long-term thinking instead of quick profit maximization

That sums up the company's philosophy quite well. It’s not about quick results, but about the long term. When making an investment, the focus isn’t on how quickly it pays off, but on whether it will still make sense many years down the line.

Profits stay within the company, and the same applies within the family: those who work here can make a living from it. But family ties alone aren't enough.

“We don’t see ourselves as owners, but as stewards who take responsibility and pass the company on.”

Perhaps that is precisely why this business is still in operation today.

How wool fabrics are made at Mehler

At Mehler, the fabric is produced entirely in-house, from start to finish. This makes many things easier and, at the same time, makes it special.

This allows us to respond flexibly and accommodate individual requests. If something is technically feasible, we will do our best to make it happen.

Each area operates in its own way. Some steps require experience and a good feel for the process, while others are highly technical. In the end, everything comes together.

Wool as a Raw Material: Selection, Quality, and Properties

Wool is a natural material, and that is exactly what makes it so special. It is not always the same; it varies depending on its origin, climate, and the animals' diet.

That is why a fabric is usually not made from just one type of wool. Different grades are combined to ensure a consistent final result.

There are very fine wools that are extremely soft and comfortable, and coarser ones that are particularly durable. Which type is used depends on the intended use of the fabric.

The History of the Mehler Textile Factory: Values and Responsibility Since 1644

The year 1942 also marks a significant turning point in the factory’s long history, as that was when the plant was shut down.

“People knew what was happening next door.” Driven by a clear sense of their own values and an attitude that was incompatible with the system, they voiced criticism of the Nazi regime and openly addressed injustices.

As a result, the company’s managing directors at the time—four brothers—came under the Gestapo’s scrutiny and went into hiding for a while. In 1946, operations at the company resumed.

These experiences continue to shape the company to this day and are reflected in the way we work: responsibly, collaboratively, and with a commitment to achieving success together.

Wool Fabrics in Furniture Design: Use in Armchairs and Sofas

Mehler fabrics are used in many different areas. It’s especially exciting to see them in places where we come into contact with them every day, such as on our furniture.Sternzeit Sofa mit Wollstoff Bezug von der Tuchfabrik Mehler

When such high-quality wool fabric from Mehler is paired with one of our armchairs or sofas, the result is something very serene and timeless. The material and design complement each other perfectly, as both embody quality and durability.

Guinness World Records and Special Projects at the Mehler Textile Factory

A special highlight was the Guinness World Record in 1999.

Back then, it took just one hour and two minutes to turn a sheep into a finished suit. The entire project was technically and logistically very complex.

Nevertheless, it’s clear today that other things matter more in everyday life and business—above all, quality and reliability.

Even on projects like the film *The Grand Budapest Hotel*, the main focus was on delivering exactly what was needed. The fact that this work was ultimately honored with the Oscar for Best Costume Design shows just how important the material is to a successful outcome.

Quality characteristics of wool fabrics: naturalness and durability

Wool is generally a renewable raw material with a unique quality that you can see and feel.

“Our fabrics are processed as naturally as possible.”

Many of the steps are purely mechanical, meaning they rely on movement, pressure, and heat.

Chemicals are used only where necessary, such as during the dyeing process. We also take care to ensure that everything is done as gently as possible.

Dyeing with natural dyes is certainly possible, but it comes with certain limitations; natural dyes are often difficult to reproduce and less vibrant. Pure, natural shades—ranging from beige to dark brown—derived from undyed wool are, of course, just as durable and long-lasting as chemically dyed fabrics.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Mehler Textile Factory and Its Wool Fabrics

What is the Mehler Cloth Factory?

The Mehler Textile Factory is the oldest textile factory in Germany still in operation. Fabrics have been produced there since 1644, and today the business is run by the 11th generation of the family.

What makes Mehler's wool fabrics special?

The fabrics are characterized by natural processing, durable quality, and end-to-end production, from raw materials to the finished fabric.

Where does the wool for the fabrics come from?

The wool comes from various regions around the world, including Australia, South America, and Europe, and is selected based on its intended use.

Why is wool used instead of synthetic fabrics?

Wool is a renewable resource that regulates temperature, is durable, and has properties that synthetic materials cannot fully replicate.

Are the fabrics chemically treated?

Most of the processing is done mechanically. Chemicals are used only minimally and selectively—for example, during dyeing—and are then washed out.

Where are these materials used?

In addition to clothing, the fabrics are also used in furniture design, such as for the upholstery of armchairs and sofas by Sternzeit Design.
